NLG Legal Observers®

What Is the Legal Observer® Program?

The Legal Observer® program is part of a comprehensive system of legal support coordinated by the National Lawyers Guild designed to enable people to express their political views as fully as possible, without unconstitutional disruption or interference by the government and with the least possible consequences from the criminal justice system. In addition to Legal Observers®, Guild attorneys provide legal defense for protesters who are arrested and bring civil litigation to protect protesters’ Constitutional rights.

Who Are Legal Observers®?

Legal Observers® are typically, but not exclusively, law students, legal workers (for example, paralegals or employees of a community based organization that works on legal issues) and lawyers who may or may not be licensed locally. Legal Observers® are trained and directed by Guild attorneys, who often have established attorney-client relationships with activist organizations, or are in litigation challenging police tactics at political protests.

  1. There is Pipeline Protest camp in Rayne, LA that is in need of some green hat support. I received this message from one of the camp leaders this morning:

“helicopters are now buzzing ‘s house and their private security is across from camp shining bright lights on our campers tents all night long and more harassment daily. the police are on the construction site allowing this to happen.”

This strikes me a clear violation of duty. As a veteran I can not stand by and allow that to happen. They are on 11 acres of privately owned land, they are a 501c3 legal entiy, and they have cameras and documentation of the on going harassment but not support to push it forward. Please look into this. I can be reached for more clarification.
